Film Review - “ Holestepper”
(director - Sergio Fernández Muñoz)
“Holestepper” is a powerful, character-driven, school drama about Angel (Oswaldo Salas), an enthusiastic yet diffident teacher, who due to his left leg disability, becomes a victim of digital abuse by some of his students.
When the gentle and patient school teacher discovers his social media degradation he decides to take drastic and somewhat controversial measures in order to teach a valuable lesson to his cyberbullies which eventually will lead to a new cycle of humiliation, not only for him but to some of his abusers too.
He overcomes all personal obstacles and hesitations, becoming a ‘lesser’ version of a tragic hero.
The expertly utilized camera blocking, staging and lighting in addition with the impactful screenplay and of course Salas’ compelling performance, gripping and intense, with its unique kinesiology and raw authenticity, create an engaging storytelling which ends up to a timely and thought-provoking short film that sheds light on the damaging effects of Digital Abuse on individuals and society as a whole.
Paulina Bazán (Francesca) also delivered a poignant performance, embodying vulnerability and strength with remarkable authenticity.
Film director Sergio Fernández Muñoz cleverly uses a series of POV shots establishing a subjective perspective of the surrounding environment as it is seen through the students’ mobile camera, introducing us to their perception of the world and to the new reality of our era, as well.
Nevertheless, the excessive use of the POV shots could be avoided, giving their place to a more balanced approach to shot composition thus creating a more structured storyline and an improved viewing experience.
“Holestepper” is a thorough work, daring, impactful and prophetic. A debut short film that speaks volumes about Sergio Fernández Muñoz’s directing abilities and potential as an artist overall.
