Every submitted film is reviewed through a careful and impartial evaluation process, regardless of genre, budget, or country of origin. All entries compete across 15 distinct award categories, within a competition structure that is designed to be fair, inclusive, and artist-centered.
The selection process is entirely meritocratic. Each submission is evaluated by the Festival’s programming team based on artistic quality, originality, storytelling strength, technical execution, and overall impact. From this process, a curated group of films is chosen as Official Selections. All Official Selections are automatically qualified to compete in the annual Festival and are screened live during the Festival’s annual event.
Once a film is selected, the Festival contacts the creative teams of the Official Selections to provide all necessary details and to guide them through the process leading to the annual live Festival event, including screening logistics, scheduling, and participation in Festival activities.
The Festival’s journey began with its inaugural live event in Preveza, Greece, in May 2022. Since last year, the Festival’s Award Ceremony has taken place at the Roman Odeon of Ancient Nicopolis, in Preveza, Greece—an exceptional historical setting where contemporary cinema meets ancient cultural heritage.
Award-winning films are determined by an esteemed international jury committee composed of respected professionals from the global film industry. The jury is mostly comprised of the previous edition’s award winners, ensuring a peer-driven, artist-led evaluation process grounded in professional integrity, continuity, and deep understanding of the Festival’s values. The jury independently selects the winners across all 15 award categories.
The Festival’s main competition is divided into two budget groupings: No/Low Budget Short Film and Short Film. This distinction exists solely to identify films eligible for the Festival’s unique award, the Short Encounters Award. The Short Encounters Award is presented exclusively to a no/low budget short film and stands as a core statement of the Festival’s philosophy: talent, vision, and aesthetic competence matter more than financial resources—Art comes first.
While no/low budget films qualify for consideration for the Short Encounters Award, they are by no means limited to it. These films compete equally in all other categories, including the Short Film category, alongside higher-budget productions.
In addition to artistic excellence, the Short Encounters Award also places strong emphasis on a film’s social impact. Eligible films are evaluated for their humanitarian, social, or human rights perspective, recognizing cinema’s power to engage with meaningful issues and provoke reflection, empathy, and awareness.
Due to the high volume of submissions received, the Festival does not provide individual feedback on every entry, nor does it justify or explain decisions regarding non-selected films. No inquiries, discussions, or arguments concerning non-selection will be entertained. Filmmakers seeking professional insight may opt for a Critical Review at the time of submission. In such cases, one of the Festival’s qualified professionals will provide thoughtful, constructive feedback within 7 to 10 days, depending on workload.
This process ensures fairness, artistic integrity, and a clear pathway from submission to live screening, while celebrating cinema as both an art form and a powerful social voice.
